Zorro II memory on 3000?

I have a 2052 memory card sitting here, waiting for something to do. I own a 3000, which could use more memory. I know the 16bit ZorroII memory card will work in the 3000, but what kind of penalty am I facing in terms of performance by using it? --hal -- hgm@ncsu.edu "This is a beta signature, and as such, no guarantee can be made as to the worth and durabilty of this text."

(This is my first attempt at writing a reply on USENET, so please bear with me). As far as I understand it, accessing 16-bit wide memory with a 32-bit will effectively halve your performance, since the processor has to fetch 32-bit each data segment in two 16-bit segments, doubling the amount of CPU cycles needed to access memory (cf. Amazing Amiga, 6(11) November 1991, 67.) Nikolaj

5-10 years at hard labor...
OK, maybe nothing quite so horrible. Speed-wise, the A2052 or any other Zorro
II RAM board will run at about half the speed of unsaturated Chip RAM.
Effectively less if you run code from it. Power-wise, the A2052 is a power
hog, and will gobble roughly 3Amps at 5VDC from your A3000 (you have a total
of 17.5 of those Amps to spread around). It will also have the side-effect
of turning your A3000 into a space heater, which may or may not be a good thing
depending on the normal room temperature you live with.
