Trimnews, Batchnews, renumber?

In AmigaUUCP, when you run Trimnews, it just deletes old articles, but leaves the article numbering where it was. The result is that you end up with numbers in the thousands fairly quickly, and they never seem to go down! And when that happens, DNews becomes VERY slow. In an attempt to correct this, I wrote a renumber program which moves the numbers down, updating the .dnewsrc file and the .next file as it does. However, now I get an error message from BatchNews saying that files are missing. What I wonder is, why does BatchNews care? I'm not feeding this stuff down to anyone else; my only link is to the place I got those files from in the first place. Is this just an artifact of the way that messages are unpacked, or does it indicate a real problem? Can I just ignore those messages? If not, do I have to also update numbering in some other file, and if so, what? Alternately, can someone suggest a better newsreader that avoids these problems, and how to get it? (I've asked this one before but my post may not have gotten out.) -- * Frank J. Perricone * fjp@crystal.mv.com * fidonet#1:325/611.0 *

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think just resetting your .next files would do the trick (just don't do it too often, or incoming articles will overwrite the old ones). On the other hand, I'm a firm believer in overkill and really like your approach :). : However, now I get an error message from BatchNews saying that files are : missing. : What I wonder is, why does BatchNews care? It's my guess that first you posted at least one article, then ran your renumber program, then ran BatchNews, right? In that case, it would be pretty obvious why BatchNews complains; it's trying to batch articles that no longer exist (at least not by the name it's looking for). There should be a file by the name of your feed in UUBATCH: ; examine it to find out how things work :) (post something first). Possible solutions: - set AutoBatch in your Config file (the full entry should read AutoBatch autobatch); that way articles you post are batched right away, and you'll be able to play with 'renumber' to your heart's content; - after posting one or more articles, be sure to run BatchNews *before* running your renumber program and everything should be fine; - if you already put all this effort into this program, you may want to go the extra mile and update UUBATCH:<your_feed> as well :). : Alternately, can someone suggest a better newsreader that avoids these : problems, and how to get it? (I've asked this one before but my post : may not have gotten out.) Probably because you renumbered it so BatchNews couldn't find it anymore :). Anyway, you may want to give tin a try. You can find it on Aminet (in comm/news I suppose). Feel free to mail me if you can't find it, or have any other questions. -- Arnoud W. At least current versions of DNews don't. DNews goes from the highest article number it knows about, to the value stored in the .next file minus one. And when doing a subscribe, it examines all files in a directory, but not one-by-one. > In an attempt to correct this, I wrote a renumber program which moves the > numbers down, updating the .dnewsrc file and the .next file as it does. > However, now I get an error message from BatchNews saying that files are > missing. > > What I wonder is, why does BatchNews care? This is dependent on the uulib:sys file. > Alternately, can someone suggest a better newsreader that avoids these > problems, and how to get it? Yeah - but you can safely archive a reference newsgroup to back-up media
without having duplicate numbers. The 'next number to use' is kept in a
small file called .next in the directory the postings are kept in, and
to change numbering, all you have to do is to somhow edit that file. But
beware, the number is used as filename .... and there may be other files
that you should simply delete and rebuild if you want to start numbering
of all messages 'from scratch'.
Kind regards
