UUCP / TCP

Hello,
This is probably a VERY stupid question, but...
I have a TCP connection with my university (SLIP/PPP). Are there any
chances of using UUCP over this connection, or is this a whole different
protocol?
Thanks!
Joost

That is an IP connection. But if you have IP, you can use TCP on top
of it. Actually, these two are probably not too well separable from a
pure user's perspective.

Both. :)
UUCP (which is vertically and horizontally divided in multiple indi-
vidual protocols) can be used on a multitude of byte streams (both
secured and unsecured ones), including a raw modem link or a TCP
stream. Just as you can have your modem connect to another one and run
UUCP over that, you can open a TCP connection to port 540 of another
computer and run UUCP over that link -- provided, UUCP is installed
and running on the other side.
Make sure that you use a file transfer protocol apt for the kind of
connection you use. For a raw modem link, you usually want one that
provides checksumming and error recovery (like v), for a TCP link you
want a dumb one (like e or t) for performance reasons (TCP already
does ensure reliable transmission).
But I am not sure if this really is what you wanted to ask about,
because all this requires that there is a UUCP server for you some-
where to which you can make a UUCP connection. If your university just
gives you SLIP/PPP access, you are presumably supposed to use tradi-
tional IP-based protocols to get your news & mail (NNTP, SMTP, POP3).

the wUUCP package has this option built in.

It should be on aminet. -- // Sebastian Rittau jroger@jroger.in-berlin.de \X/ http://www.in-berlin.de/User/jroger/index.html

Actually it would be correct to say that you can use wUUCP with the
telser.device and make use of the undocumented e protocol for tcp
connections. Works quite nicely as a matter of fact. :-)
