Is it a known bug, that when you have over 1200 batches in your UUSPOOL: dir, Uuxqt will tell you that there are no batches to process? I presume that it checks the directory and runs into some or other "maximum number of files reached" barrier - pretty poor programming, if you ask me, but what the h*ck. On another note, I managed to poll UUCP over a TCP/IP connection using telser.device. This may not come to you as the greatest news since the invention of the wheel, but I think it's pretty neat. Share and enjoy, Peter. -- Peter Korsten | peterk@IAEhv.nl | peter@grendel.IAEhv.nl (personal) helpdesk/hacker | http://www.IAEhv.nl/iae/people/peterk/ for PGP key "I don't use computers." -Irving Gould, former Commodore executive

You might also get a kick if your provider also allows you to use the
e protocol ove g. Your transfer rates over TCP will shoot through the
roof. You can use the e protocol if you grab the UUCICO in the wUUCP
package. It has various undocumented protocols.
Take care...
Carlos

I didn't ask you, but what the heck. If you want to fix it, and contribute the fix to the greater amiga community, please do so. Make sure that your fix is efficient and works with all of UUCP and I-Net 225 and the FD Inetutils, too. Er, you mean with e over TCP they will go up again to nearly the level they could have if you used g over a raw modem connection. -- __ __/// Arno Eigenwillig /\ <arno@yaps.rhein.de> \/ PGP key available. \XX/ V+49-2225-5870 /\ <Arnooo @ #amigager> \/ MIME 8bit welcome.

Have I hit a sensitive spot? I'm one of the programmers of it. I didn't originally code it. You can call it poor programming all you wish; but until you give us something better, I think you should keep your mouth shut. Does that mean you have "hit a sensitive spot"? Perhaps. I'm tired of people complaining about free software. Just utterly and completely tired of it. > | If you want to fix it, and contribute the fix to the greater amiga > | community, please do so. Don't know why you would presume to state that it was. If you think that porting Taylor UUCP will be easy to do, just time consuming, then I think you have another _several_ thinks coming your way. You're wrong. Perhaps not the most desirable form, but it's a limit that works 99.99999% of the time. And guess what! The code doesn't crash when you exceed the limit, nor does it cost you a 20% or more performance hit for the other .000001% of the time. > | > On another note, I managed to poll UUCP over a TCP/IP connection using > | > telser.device. If you want to take a look at my programming knowledge, you should take a look at the Video Backup System of LSP (version 3.0). I programmed the complete user interface. Try putting it in some weird video mode or with another font. Should work like a breeze. | Does that mean you have "hit a sensitive spot"? Perhaps. I'm | tired of people complaining about free software. Just utterly | and completely tired of it. I spend my days answering questions about Windows 95. Talking about getting tired. But I'm not complaining on the software as a whole, is works. UUCP may not be the most flashy and hot GUI application, but I've got few things to complain about it - except then, such things as "maximum number of" hard coded stuff. I'm using it for some time now and I'm happy with it. | My comment regarding efficiency isn't redundant. Don't know | why you would presume to state that it was. I program efficiently. I coded a fractal program that put the Mandelbrot set in 48 seconds on your screen on a stock A500 (no fast mem, no accel, 5 bitplanes, 64 iterations) without ever using the hardware or bitmap memory (yes, with Move() and Draw(), and without boundary tracing, just straight calculating). | If you think that porting Taylor UUCP will be easy to do, just | time consuming, then I think you have another _several_ thinks | coming your way. I know that many people have tried it and came across difficulties. I doubt that it will be different for me. But I won't know that until I've tried that, won't I? | There are quite a few things that could be improved in AmigaUUCP, | but what the heck -- it meets the needs of 100's of people, and | if they want to change something, the source is freely available. I've done that earlier. Depending on the programming style of the person before you it's slightly bothering to nearly unintelligable. The first thing I do with someone else's code is reformat it. | > | uucp:src/include/config.h:#define MAXFILES 1000 /* Max # of files in any news or spool directory */ | > | > Just what I thought, poor programming. | | You're wrong. The | code doesn't crash when you exceed the limit, nor does it | cost you a 20% or more performance hit for the other | .000001% of the time. I know, it's very improbable that one has more that 1000 batches waiting. As it is improbable that the intuition.library is not available, but still I check for it. But couldn't I have gotten some kind of error message? I took me quite some time to figure out why uuxqt thought that I didn't have any batches. Writing batch files using "list lformat", the lot. | > | I've been doing this since early 1992 with tn3270.device. | > | > Cool. I searched the Web for this device and nothing came up. Are you | > sure it's available for us mere mortals? | | Sure. It's part of a commercial software package called I-Net 225. What, | you expect everything to be free? Sorry, the real world doesn't work that | way. No, I didn't think that, I was just wondering where it came from. Someone suggested that it was some developer-only stuff. Appearantly not. I'm not trying to bark about someone else's free software, it's just... ah, well. I'd be surprised myself if anything ever came out of me looking at those Unix sources, but I will at least look. A UUCP-package looking like those Windoze-programs might be just what some people are looking for.
