16-Bit Overflow in Dillon UUCP

I still use Dillon UUCP 1.16, it works nicely for me since more than
two years. But now suddenly a few newsgroups, those with the biggest
traffic like csa.advocacy, didn't show up anymore. Closer investigation
showed that the article numbers (the filenames) were in low number
ranges, while the entries in .newsrc had gone beyond 32000. So
obviously UUCICO wrapped around at the 16-bit border.

Is there any way to teach this UUCICO 32-bit arithmetics without
recompiling everything?

uucico doesn't deal with news (or mail...) The problem is probably in
v1.16 of rnews.

Upgrading to v1.17b4 is one easy solution.

Not AFAIK, you need to edit the .next files every now and then, or simply
erase your newstree completely. I have been using 1.17b4 for a year now,
BTW, this version has quite some bugfixes, especially in sendmail. I don't
know if the 32k boundary has been fixed for news, but my UULIB:seq file
shows ~59000, so maybe it was.

I fixed this problem when I took over AmigaUUCP from Matt in 1992
(91? - I forget). 1.17b4 is available for FTP on stargate.warped.com
and on wade1.ab.umd.edu. It's a "drop-in" replacement, but I
recommend you read the changes files.

It really has nothing to do with 16-bit arithmetic by the way.

The 32K boundary has been removed. You shouldn't need to edit anything.
I've got a couple of groups with numbers in the 250K area.

As I said before: upgrade to AmigaUUCP 1.17b4.

What I didn't ask: what newsreader? You may need an upgrade
there as well.

Thanks for the hint.

Indeed I found out myself after some nice people sent help info via
mail (rnews explicitly does a 15-bit masking, weird). Many thanks again.

No problem here, I'm using a self-written one, yes, in AmigaBasic :-).
I just ftp'ed the current version of ACE and am thinking of porting it
to ACE Basic, so that I can make it public. Let's see.

Ack! You must be seriously kidding.. AmigaBASIC was one of the slowest and
buggiest programs I ever used on the Amiga. Which figures, as it was the
usual MS standard rushjob. I even found the C=4032's BASIC 4.0 better (which
is MS too, BTW)..

You can safely claim that anywhere, except for a newsgroup Peter is
reading. (/me searches his Nomex underwear...)

BTW: de.comp.sys.amiga.uucp does not exist.

Tell that to Dr. Kittel, I just followed up without changing the headers :)

de.comp.sys.amiga.uucp does not exists anymore and that already for a
year or two! Use de.comp.sys.amiga.comm instead.

I added it and set the followup-to line to only point to the valid
newsgroups.

You never heard of Dr. Peter Kittel? The person knowing how to make
AmigaBasic work on an Amiga 1234 with AmigaOS 5.67 or whatever hard-
and software he gets his hands at? Probably the last AmigaBasic user?
You read the wrong newsgroups. ;-)

Stefan.

Not kidding, seriously. Though I have a bit different AmigaBasic than
you perhaps have experienced... I run my newsreader in interpreted
mode and it runs completely up to my demands, also speed-wise (on a
normal 25-MHz A3000).

Oops, I have worked with this version for several years day and night
(ok, there were some breaks :-) on my own 8032, but AmigaBasic really
has some features going for it.

Uh, I'm not so picky.

Hmm, my article counter is at 28, could be a bogus newsgroup, not
totally dead...
