Hi, Is is possible to do an uucp poll trough a ppp link to internet? C'ya, -- * Ronald van Eijck * * Sh*t F*ck. Any smart netcensor-robot should've detected this!

Configure a telser unit for "dumb" TCP connection (telser.hosts/bits=00000000001) and configure your UUCP to know that telser ACU (L.ports) and to use it as "serial" device to call your server (L.sys) on TCP port 540 (atdtserver.do.main,540). Use a "dumb" protocol (t, e); smart modem protocols are overkill, as TCP already assures safe transmission. The server needs to support it, too, of course. Taylor UUCP is capable of doing so, but don't ask me how to configure it. -- __ __/// Arno Eigenwillig /\ <arno@yaps.rhein.de> \/ PGP key \XX/ V+49-2225-5870 /\ <Arnooo @ #amigager> \/ available

Depends on what you mean. If you mean, can you poll some other site that's
connected to the Internet and running UUCP, then yes, and the technique
is quite common. There are quite a few UUCP protocols designed for this
specifically. Unfortunately AmigaUUCP doesn't support any of them.
You'll need telser.device if you want to do this with AmigaUUCP, and if
you succeed, let us all know!
If you mean "Can I poll my provider for news and email over PPP" then
the answer is ask your provider, but the answer will probably be no.

Why not? Mine supports it. Most I've seen do, if you buy the "extra charge" uucp connect option. -- // Michael B. Smith \X/ mbs@adastra.cvl.va.us

Most I've seen do, if you buy the "extra > charge" uucp connect option. Sorry, being unnecessarily Anglo-centric, although I doubt the situation is too dissimilar throughout Europe. Basically most UK ISPs have never heard of UUCP, and only supply SLIP/PPP connections. Even those that have heard of UUCP tend to view it as a sideline - none of them offer any improvements upon the basic UUCP set up then the Taylor protocols. Batched SMTP? gzip/freeze'd news? Nah! :-( The main point I was checking was that the author knew enough about UUCP to know that UUCP & PPP are not identical protocols [or remotely close] This could have been [but wasn't] one of those newbie questions "I know that UUCP and PPP are both used for news & mail so can I use UUCP on a PPP thing" [like the "Can I use Mac software on my Amiga" etc.] I just wanted to cover the angle. > -- > //

Being that original author I want to state that I do know the difference. I want to use the setup becaus phone charges for my ppp provider are cheaper then those for the uucp provider. I want to log in at my ppp provider and telnet to the uucp provider, then uucico has to grab the data from there trough something like sernet.device. I'll be trying to set this up in a couple of days. If things work out ok I'll post here. I do something similar with tn3270.device virtel Any telnet 38400 111-1111 "" connect\suvaarpa.virginia.edu in:-\r\c-in:-\r\c-in: \duserid\n\c rd:-\c-rd:-\c-rd: passwd\n\c You have to be careful about escapes and spaces (\s). Yours is a bit more complicated. :) -- // Michael B. Smith \X/ mbs@adastra.cvl.va.us
