  No, changing the 'nonewline' variable affects only the shell.
What's occurring when you "cat > .ttyd2" is that the terminal drivers
are adding a LF onto every CR you send.  You could write a small program
that was just like 'cat', but turned off the terminal 'CRMOD' flag
before sending the data to the modem port.

  When you convert CR's to LF's, the driver doesn't expand the LF because,
well, it just doesn't. :-)
