After some help from Mike Frankowski, I've managed to work around the 
problems I mentioned earlier.

vfprintf is just vsprintf(buffer) ; fprintf(buffer), so no biggie there.
fileno I replaced with a small function to get the GS/OS file ref
from the FILE structure.  it's very small, but I think it should be
included with the GNO distribution in the future (gnolib?)
mktemp - I havn't replaced this one yet, but will if noone has one 
already written.  it sounds pretty simple
execvp - apparently this is identical to Orca's "system" call.  Live
and learn :)

Replies on whether a mktemp already exists are welcome.
