========
The following is an _informal_ summary (from Saul Rosenberg)...
OpenDoc is an object oriented, software component based system. Info is
stored in "compound documents", which are container files holding
components (parts). Each component may be understood and edited by
different software tools. The goal is to encourage mix and match of
small, lean, focused components, rather than huge monster suites that
are hard to develop and harder to extend.
OpenDoc will be an integral part of Copland (the next Mac OS, 1997).
IBM has announced plans for the next major release of OS/2 Warp (1996).
The primary competitor is Microsoft's "OLE".
CyberDog is a set of WWW Internet access components for OpenDoc, and
demonstrates many of its capabilities. The components are "internet-
aware", and can take actions, such as having a live Internet link in
the middle of your documents. E.g.: start a web browser at a given
URL, or start FTP to retrieve current info, or automatic email to get
quick feedback on the readers of your document. There are many more
possibilities for interactive content.
Come on Wed Jan 24 to see and hear the full story!
