i always wondered how fast the public domain z80 emulator really was, and now
i know. i ran the whetstone benchmark (taken from byte magazine) on the
emulator using turbo pascal. the result was:

  machine compiler whetstones/sec (approximate)
----------------------------------------------
  sbc S-100 turbo pascal 4,000
atari st (z80) turbo pascal 465
  atari st absoft fortran 55,000

however, i also found that turbo pascal can compile and link a short program
about 6 times faster than alcyon C. strange, isn't it?
