What you describe there is actually pretty hard to achieve by a normal 
application, even (or particularly) by a rather buggy one. So I reckon 
you fell victim to some unfortunate circumstances, maybe some sort of
interference on the harddisk cable. I really doubt that NewsWatch should 
be the culprit.
