Be, Inc. Is Coming to Austin! July 16 & 17 Be, Inc. is coming to Austin, Texas for two meetings to show off their new computer, the BeBox. It is a multiprocessor PowerPC running a new operating system which has an integrated GUI (Mac-like) as well as modern operating system features such as virtual memory and multi-threading (Unix-like). If you have not heard about the machine, or if you want more information, check out http://www.be.com/ for pretty thorough descriptions of the hardware as well as the software. There will be two meetings, both located on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin. The times and places: July 16 Austin BUG Meeting Demo 6:30 pm, Tuesday, July 16 Taylor Hall 2.106 (2nd floor, room 106) University of Texas at Austin (Taylor Hall is on the corner of Speedway and 24th) MEETING NAME (for registration): UT-Austin Tuesday Important Information about the Taylor Hall Meeting! For those attending the Taylor Hall meeting on the 16th, don't bother trying to enter the building through the external stairway--this leads to Computation Center offices only and the door will be locked anyway. Also, don't bother with either doorway on the North side. Enter the building either on the South side or through the double doors on the West side at the head of the driveway (and turn right once inside) to reach the portion of Taylor Hall occupied by the Computer Science Dept. Thanks to Glen Martin for this info. July 17 Austin BUG Meeting Demo 6:00 pm, Wednesday, July 17 Goldsmith Hall 3.120 (3rd floor, room 120) University of Texas at Austin (Goldsmith Hall is on the corner of Guadalupe and 22nd) MEETING NAME (for registration): UT-Austin Wednesday Important Information about the Goldsmith Hall Meeting! You may enter Goldsmith Hall on either the north side, south side, or east side through the courtyard. You enter on the second floor. Go to the elevator near the south side of the building and take it to the 3rd floor. Follow the signs to the Lecture Hall. Maps are available on the Austin BUG website: http://www.purity.com/be.austin-bug/ Be, Inc., will be sending two people (included one engineer) to show off the BeBox and talk about future plans. The demo will show the brand new Be OS which is a multi-processing, multi-threaded, object-oriented operating system running on a BeBox with two 66Mhz PowerPC 603 processors. The operating system was designed from the ground up to show what can be done with a fresh approach to operating system design on low-cost multi-processor hardware. A number of demo applications will be shown which demonstrate the features of the operating system and the hardware. They are prepared to answer technical questions. REGISTRATION FOR BE DEMO TOUR EVENTS: E-mail bedemotour@be.com to register for an event. Please tell us your name, the names of the people coming with you, and the meeting name (UT-Austin, Tuesday or Wednesday;). Admission for unregistered guests will be on a first-come, first-served basis. ---------------------------------------- Parking info for Meetings: Info from Brian Stern Anyone can park on campus after 4PM in designated spots. There are clear signs that indicate what's available and what's safe. At that time of day there should be plenty of open spots within a block or so of the buildings. If necessary there is parking on the street nearby. This would mostly be west of Guadalupe in the area from 22nd street to 25th street. Info from Dean Luick Unless things have changed recently, use the student parking lot at the NorthWest corner of 26th and Speedway. Non-sticker parking starts at 5:00PM on a weekday. (Note that this is much closer to Taylor Hall than Goldsmith Hall.) Info from Glenn Martin For the Taylor Hall meeting (Tuesday), you should be able to find parking on the streets (just read the signs to make sure it's okay). If you cant' find anything right by the building, there should by ample parking on San Jacinto near 24th. Info from Stephen Beaulieu For the Goldsmith Hall meeting (Wednesday), you should be able to find parking just west of Guadalupe on Rio Grande around 23rd Street. You might also want to pay for parking at Dobie Mall (the bright blue tower at Guadalupe and 21st.) stephen beaulieu hippo@mail.utexas.edu austin bug administrator austin bug website: www.purity.com/be/austin-bug austin bug listserver: austin-bug@purity.com
