About the BeBox and the Be Operating System
The BeBox brings symmetric multiprocessing architecture home --
the first BeBox has two CPUs, and Be has indicated plans to ship
units with up to eight CPUs. For an expected retail price of
$1,600.00, the bare-bones BeBox features:
2 PowerPC 603 CPUs
8 Mbytes RAM
3 PCI slots
5 ISA slots
4 drive bays
SCSI
IDE
parallel port
4 serial ports
3 infrared ports
MIDI
16-bit sound
2 PC standard joystick ports
PC standard keyboard port
PS/2 mouse port
& for the hardware hacker, Be's custom 37-pin "GeekPort"
Which should be enough I/O for just about anybody....
The BeOS is an inherently parallel operating system that features
a multiprocessor microkernel, pre-emptive multitasking, protected
memory (with the ability to share memory when appropriate),
interapplication messaging, real-time architecture for handling
audio & video, an integrated database built into the filesystem,
virtual memory, dynamically loadable device drivers, and an
integrated windowing environment. The BeOS includes a command
shell (based on GNU bash) as well as the GUI; many GNU and other
standard tools, including TCP/IP networking tools, have been
ported already, and others are in development. The BeBox ships
with development tools including a special version of Metrowerks
CodeWarrior. The BeOS is mostly POSIX compliant, and the BeBox also
runs LINUX; the hardware design is PReP-based and future models
will be CHRP compliant, enabling Be CPUs to run Macintosh and
Windows software once those operating systems migrate to the
PowerPC Platform.

If you are a developer with a Be product, project, or plan, this
is your chance to present it to other Be geeks. If you'd like to
make a presentation, please let us know -- see
http://bug.onthe.net/boston/presentationform.html
Full details are on the web page, so I'm not going to take bandwidth
for them here. If you plan to come to the meeting, *please* take a
minute to go to the web page & register. If (& only if) you preregister
you will be eligible for the prize drawing, featuring the Be T-shirt,
the (in)famous 'we BE geeks' pocket protector, and a grand prize not
yet selected....
This meeting is free and open to the public . (There will be a box up
front for donations to defray expenses.) Places will be held for
people who preregister (up to the room's capacity) until 10 minutes
before the meeting. Again, full details are at:

Looking forward to seeing you April 12!

Many thanks to Mark and Dominic for a great demo! The audience was enthusiastic and the Be-folk were attentitve, appreciative, and kept hype to the barest minimum. Also thanks to Carl for organizing. There was one question I did not have a chance to ask: Are there any plans for the BeOs to support Unicode? J.Burgio burgio@acm.org

I stayed for a major portion of the Q&A before I decided I better leave to keep from arriving home in New Hampshire at 2AM. :-) If you are interested in a copy of the tape, feel free to e-mail me at mad@deeptht.mv.com. /mad
