very long log in time

In our site we have a CD4680 (MIPS machine with R6000 microprocessor) under
EP/IX (enhanced RiscOS system made by Control Data).

We have a strange problem:

* the time spent for login out can be very long for some users (and not for others)
* the time to connect (log in) in a ftp session can be very long...
It seems to be proportional to the user's position in the /etc/passwd file !!

Is there anybody who has faced the same problem ??
has anybody a solution ??

Thank you in advance

-Philippe

It would be interesting, how you resolve references to the paswd file,
did you use files or nis in /etc/vis.conf?

If you use "files", each utilty which gather information from passwd-file,
did have to scan through the passwd-file. If you have a rather large
passwd-file, you would see the difference for users which are at the top,
and those which are at the bottom of the file.

NIS (aka YP) did use dbm files, so a reference to passwd using NIS should
not suffer to the position in the passwd file. But I've seen in the
CDC-Solver, that EP/IX 1.4.2 has a Bug which also give you bad responses
to NIS requests. I did not experience this problem on my system, but I think its
also related to large passwd files. The entry in Solver says, that there
exists a patch, which fixes the most important utilities, and it will be
completly solved in 1.4.3 .

We've experienced it as well and have PSR'd the problem.

There are several things we've found:

-- Position in /etc/passwd does make a difference.

-- If you're using /etc/shadow, you'll:
    - Find FTP to have unbelievably long pauses during login (4-6 mins).
    - Ditto with the POP mail server.
    - "xdap" won't work.

-- Trying to use NIS with /etc/shadow:
    - "Sort of" works, but is not supported by CDC.
    - POP mail server fails.
    - REXECD fails.

So far, the only workarounds we've found are:
    - Don't use /etc/shadow, response varies depending on /etc/passwd position.
    - Above and use NIS, response is fast.

I believe the dismally poor response found when using /etc/shadow is a
critical PSR. Further, I believe CDC must provide an alternative to NIS for
random access to /etc/passwd that includes support for /etc/shadow.
