Reading 1/4 tape on a MASSCOMP which was written on SGI IRIS

I have been trying to read 1/4 inch cartridge
tapes from a masscomp, written in tar format, on my
Silicon Graphics Iris. Both use the 150MB drives from
archive. I get a checksum error when I try to read. I
also have tried cpio. The Iris uses SysV Unix. Any ideas?
