I, too, have bought Suitable Solutions MS-DOS 3.1 - it's almost worth it
for a decent backup program!
There is a DEC-written backup program called BCK, (I have a copy of V3.0
somewhere, I believe) which works very nicely. Before I got 3.1 it was
the backup utility I used all the time, and I never had a problem. It has
some particularly nice features like allowing you to put every other backup
volume in a different drive, so you can have the next volume ready in drive
B, for example, when you're backing up to A. Also, if you type "Z" (I think)
for the next drive, it formats the disk for you. The only disadvantage
I found (and maybe I wasn't using the program properly) is that you had
to delete the old backup files on the disk before doing a new backup. Thus,
the instant before you run the backup, you have NO BACKUP! (unless you
keep two sets . . .). Also, it's not compatible with the file format of
any other backup.
In summary: my advice also is to get 3.1 from Suitable Solutions. (Contact
their Business Manager, Julie Starr, at (408) 727-9090). If you don't want
to do that, then let me know, and I'll send* you BCK - or post* it, if there's
enough interest. [*However, I have to check first and see whether the
documentation precludes distribution. I have this funny feeling that it
was a "for DEC internal use only" product. Anyone at DEC (or with a contact
at DEC) able to find out whether they'd mind it being distributed?]
