DecMate to PC transfer

Does anyone know of a reasonably inexpensive way to transfer
documents stored on old DecMate 8 inch floppy disks to an MS-DOS
PC? Plain text files without the word processing formatting
would be fine. The people with the disks and the PC have 2
DecMates, but neither has the communications option board. Are
the communications boards available somewhere, or is it possible
to make a cable to do the transfer through the printer port on
the DecMate? If anyone has any information on this or has
transferred documents theirselves, I'd appreciate hearing about
it.
