From: ERIC SPEARS

I'm a new Rainbow user. Recently bought a Model B machine at Boeing Surplus
and would like to expand it a little. Here's what I'm looking for:
256 K RAM Chips (18 of them) to max out at 896 k
Graphics Board for Rainbow
Color Monitor for Rainbow
Tractor feed assembly for DEC LA34 printer
Rainbow compatible hard drive larger than 20 mBytes

Here are some things that I'd like to sell or trade for the above items:
Qume Sprint 11/40+ Daisywheel Printer with serial interface
Victor 9000, 2 disk drives, 128 k RAM, dBase II, WS, SC
PCturbo 286e Memory expansion card for I*M PC,XT,AT, 3 mBytes RAM &
80287
Hayes 1200 External Modem
A/B Switch Box
A/B/C Switch Box

If a tractor feed for the DECWriter can't be located, I'd also be interested
in getting ahold of a DEC compatible printer with a tractor feed.

Leave me a message here or call (206) 847-4640 if you're interested in doing
business.

I have an AT on one end of my computer table and my Rainbow on the other
end. I use the RX50 driver in the AT, and move data back and forth regularly.
I have never found it to be a problem in any way. It gives me a lot of
flexibility in running the right program on the right machine at the right
time. I use the Rainbow mostly for communications in one form or another
(Kermit on the Rainbow makes a beautiful intelligent terminal emulator for
connecting to a VAX/VMS host) and the faster AT for work requiring speed
or I*M compatibility. I also archive all of the Rainbow software on 1.2MB
diskettes on the AT - this cuts down the number of disktettes I have lying
around in various corners of the room.

Hi People
In the first edition of Lotus (ver 1a) if one was deep in the menus he/she
could press the cancel Key and get out in one single key-stroke.
With version 2.1 I have to press the escape key umpteen times any time
I want to get back from a wrong menu.
Is there a short way of doing this ? Any help will be appreciated.

Sad, but true. Unless you have a good reason to specially want the Rainbow,
then you're probably better off with a clone. I bought my first clone back
when I realized that it cost the same to put a hard disk in my Rainbow or
to buy a complete XT clone with hard disk. (The new found PC compatibility
was a bonus.) Prices have changed a lot since back then, but some of the diffi
with the maximizing the 'bow have not.
Too bad, except for the bZZZZZT of the RX50, it is a very nice machine.
(It's hard to realize that just how advanced the keyboard was when it first
came out. It's still my favorite! )

As NC of net 142 (and IFNA member) with a long history of importation
of echomail long distance and feeding it free to many nodes around my state,
I don't think that I can be accused of not contributing my share to my HOBBY
of computer BBS's. I do not take the hundreds of dollars and many hours of
time
I spend on the net as a business expense. This is a hobby. It is BECAUSE
of people like Vince and Bob of BinkleyTerm that I do it. My 500+ users apprec
it, too.

Sir, what have you done for Fidonet lately?

> Don't presume Compuserve users are ignorant of alternative services.

Why not? I've personaly talked to several CIS users who know next to nothing
about Fidonet or echomail.

> How many answers, Maynard, did you get to that query about
> the Rainbow's video memory? Care to guess how many you would

This is interesting, I'll post it on CIS and we'll see how much better
it does there.

I still have difficulty with CIS making money with messages from a distributio
system that I voluntarily support with my private funds. This is how I feel
about a one way link. Any two way links that you set up, however, I am willing
to hear about. The issue is fairness.

I'll thank you not to do any name calling in your next message.

Those without clock boards may also wish to look into a file called SETNOW.
It stores the date/time in the autoexec.bat timestamp, and is quite a pleasure
to use.

I myself use DAT.COM, which sets the system date to its own timestamp,
which can be set/updated with FDATE.COM... this can be done automatically
by FIDO or OPUS, and used with the internal clock on the USR modem, totally
eliminates any need to adjust the date, unless the modem loses power. Looks
to me like the modem could be run from batteries, which would make the whole
thing bulletproof!

Happy dating!

That doesn't sound good. I was planning on sending my $125 to get the 3.10b,
but if OPUS won't run, I'll save my money.

I really don't recall if I quoted that original origin line, or if I re-entere
it from my keyboard. I do know that I have only see tildes, no reverse questi
marks, and no blobs, in the EX-Reader origin line, and am still curious about
why you are seeing something else. The vfossil most definitely does NOT
map the character to a blob, it shows a tilde. As I said before, I am normall
reading this echo on Rainbows, or a VT-220 clone, and all I see are tildes.
When I am using a Rainbow, I am using both DECCOMM and VFOS-DEC. I don't
recall the version numbers, but they would be the latest that have shown
up here.

On the other hand, the "hi-bit" characters are illegal in echo mail origin
lines, so I am sure we can assume we will never see them again, rendering
the entire discussion moot.
