Subject: MS-DOS FOR DECMATE II
From: TED STEVENS

I realize this is not _quite_ a Rainbow question, but you're my only hope.
Here goes:

Where (besides DEC) and for how much can I find an MS-DOS board (XPU) for
my DECmate II. I understand they came populated with two options for amount
of memory (don't know how many k). Anybody know if they are expandable?

Will I need to get DEC's version of MS-DOS for the DECmate, or does the XPU
make the DECmate think it's a Rainbow (in which case I could get 3.1 from
Suitable Solutions)? In either case, would I be able to run Rainbow-specific
or only "generic" (non-IBM, of course) MS-DOS applications? If not, is it
possible there is a "Code-Blue"-like program for the DECmate?

The reason I'm interested is that I have a DECmate, and we use both DECmates
and PC compatibles at work (no Rainbows). I'd like to be able to transfer
documents back and forth, but my federal government agency is too cheap to
buy WPSPLUS-DOS (DEC) or Suitable Solutions version. There are restrictions
against putting "unauthorized s/w on the PC's (yes, they check) so I can't
get those myself. (Also, _I'm_ too cheap!)

Any suggestions???

Thanks,
Ted

V3.00 works great (locally/remotely) but version 5.03 just hangs.

You know I also am getting pretty tired of people like you who think
you are the be-all theall of the Rainbow world. I pointed out in ONE message
that there is someone who does not pay his bills and advised you all to be
careful. That is all and it would have ended there. Now for chrissakes you
too. Shut up already. I had forgotten this until a few of you started off
on a Mcwitch hunt with your Flintocks loaded.
And speaking of personal feelings, I am sure YOUR tirade above has
no personal argumentativeness at all now does it? ...You are just aggravated
because I shat upon your beloved CPM operating system, Strickler is just upset
because he was not elected Chairman of the Boston Computer Society's Digital
Group in my place, and Theall is just frustrated, walking around suffering
from a case of mistaken identity thinking he is a warrior.
Now does it end here?

That's correct - only on new non-DEC diskettes. New DEC RX50 diskettes don't
need the /I switch.

There is a program called DISK (and probably others) that, among other things,
shows all files on a disk or diskette and lets you unhide and unprotect the
system files and delete them; faster than reformatting.

BTW, "BTW" means "By the way"...

I'm sure you meant "fine" rather than "manual" for the substitution.
I see this one quite frequently, in NEWOPUS and elsewhere; but it
isn't considered polite to tell someone to RTFM in response to a plea for
help. However, we see a lot of impolite things in these echoes, don'e we?
:-)

BTW, I have a file here (area 20) that explains a number of the symbols and
abbreviations used in Fidonet; called ICONS.LST.

(I'll be disappointed if at least ONE user doesn't ask me what the

SS has announced price reductions on many of their Rainbow products
(e.g., TURBOW 286 board now $495). Those of you on their list will
be receiving a notice in the mail; others should write to them to request
it.
