Well, it's been since March that I last posted my Professional computer faq so I guess I might as well post it again. It has expanded from 45K in the last version to 65K in the current version. I apologize for the large size but since there is so little support for the PRO I purposely included as much useful information as possible. As usual, I welcome all comments, suggestions, additions. The faq will be in the next posting. Chaim R. Dworkin chaim@linc.cis.upenn.edu

Some of the issues are non-PRO as well in the RX50 FAQ, but are of interest to any user of RX50-compatible stuff, etc. cjl

In reading Chaim's FAQ, I was surprised to see a paragraph toward the beginning that said that the PRO could handle the RD53 71MB hard disk. Can anyone verify this? Does it matter if I am on a PRO 350 or 380? Does it matter if I am on P/OS or Venix? I tried to put an RD53 in a PRO and got an HD diagnostic message upon power up. I also found that Venix 1.0 wouldn't recognize the RD52 38MB HD (it formatted it as if it were an RD50 5MB HD). I'm still looking for Venix 2.1 for the PRO (Dan Lanciani are you still out there?). Also, now that we have TeleDisk, shall we set up some FTP archives for PRO software? Is this something that DECUS could be doing, so as to bypass the overhead of Media/Copying charges? Barry Kort

I'm running P/OS 2.3 ( Don't quote me, I know that it's 2. Something) and I did have to trick it to load the disk. Initially, I tried to install directly to the RD53 but the DEC installation software was smart enough to check the disk and refused to do anything with the RD53. I then reinstalled the origional RD51 and performed the full installation, which went smoothly. I then used a RX50 bootable BRU disk. This backups the RD51 onto RX50's. I backed up the disk. This took several boxes of RX50's. I then switch back to the RD53, and again booted the BRU disk asking it to restore from the RX50's to the hard disk. Well, BRU really did not care about the hardware, just if I wanted it to format and initialize the disk. This is useful if you had to replace a defective disk. I said YES and it went ahead formatting the RD53 and restored all the RX50's. I then booted the PRO with the RD53. I came up as it should, but even with the OS & a couple languages installed, I had over 100K free blocks of disk space!

I found that I could use the RD53 on the PRO 380 (but not the 350). I had to move the Drive Select Jumper on the HD to DS1 before it would work. --Barry
