I'm trying to set up UUCP between a remote machine (bastille) and a local
machine (focus) - bastille always polls focus and focus never polls
bastille.  The unique feature is that on the focus side, the 
connection goes through a modem pool and then via ethernet to focus.

Here's an abridged version of the debug output from uucico -r1 -x6 -sfocus
on bastille:

On focus I get the error:

in ERRLOG and (sometimes I get) the error:

Ubastill focus (8/25-17:32-18637) CAUGHT (SIGNAL 1)

in LOGFILE.  Does it have something to do with the fact the the modem
is not on a hardwire line to focus and is coming in (essentially) through
the network?  I can't change the /etc/ttys file to tell focus about
this since I never know which tty it will log on to. How can I fix
this?

machine info:
Bastille is a NeXT which I believe is set-up correctly ( I can't see how the
problem could be coming from here). 
Focus is a DEC VAXserver 3500 running Ultrix 4.1.  I set up uucp on focus 
using the supplied "addinsys" script with no changes.
