Dear All, I use a DecStation 5000, running Ultrix 4.1. I have been trying
to install a new SCSI disk, a Micropolis 1528 with the following specs:

1531.1 Mbytes (1342.3 Mbytes when formatted)
8 disk platters
15 r/w heads
2100 cylinders
512 bytes/sector
84 sectors/track.

I went through the MAKEDEV & formatting procedures (using
rzdisk -f known /dev/rrz1c).
Since I want 2 large partitions I have made the partitiion
table as follows:

# chpt -q /dev/rrz1a
/dev/rrz1a
Current partition table:
partition bottom top size overlap
    a 0 32767 32768 c,d,e,f
    b 32768 65535 32768 c
    c 0 2621687 2621688 a,b,d,e,f,g,h
    d 0 0 0 a,c,e,f
    e 0 0 0 a,c,d,f
    f 0 0 0 a,c,d,e
    g 65536 1335535 1270000 c
    h 1335536 2605535 1270000 c

so that I have a small "a", small "b" and large g & h partitiions.

Since I do not know what type of disk this is, I made up an entry which I call
rz58, using the specs that came with the disk literature. Following is what I
have put into the /etc/disktab file:

rz58|RZ58| Micropolis 1.2GB Winchester:\
        :ty=winchester:ns#84:nt#15:nc#2100:\
        :pa#32768:ba#8192:fa#1024:\
        :pb#32768:bb#4096:fb#1024:\
        :pc#2621688:bc#8192:fc#1024:\
        :pd#0:bd#8192:fd#1024:\
        :pe#0:be#8192:fe#1024:\
        :pf#0:bf#8192:ff#1024:\
        :pg#1270000:bg#8192:fg#1024:\
        :ph#1270000:bh#8192:fh#1024:

and then ran newfs to make new file systems with
newfs -vn /dev/rrz1a rz58
I had to run newfs on the "a" partition, and also ran it on "g" & "h", but did
not do it for "b".

The problem comes when I try to run fsck. If I make a file system on g and then
run fsck /dev/rz1g, there is no problem. Hoeever as soon as make the file
system on "h", an fsck on g gives errors. An fsck on h is OK though. If I again
run newfs on g, then g becomes OK but h gives errors.
I am not sure whether the problem is with the disk, or whether fsck
just cannot handle such large disks or what!. Has anyone had experience, good
or bad with these disks? Regards, S.Tonse.
