How to mount SUN .tar tape on VMS?

I have a VMS v5.4-2 system, with a VIPER 1/4 inch screaming tape drive, and 
for reasons unknown to me or extraterrestrials, I must mount a tape on VMS
that was created by the SUN o/s (v 4.1.1) in TAR format.  The symptoms are 
as follows:

 - VMS can mount, initialize, and backup to and from the drive.  
 - blank tapes can be init'd and mounted
 - once a sparc writes to the cartridge, vms can no longer do a darned thing
   with the tape no matter how you hold your tongue
 - the drive itself has an auto-online feature, and fails the TAR mount
   as if the drive were unable to come on-line at all

Being that i'm in the sysadmin field a longish time, i am puzzled by this 
behaviour...has anyone ever successfully extracted TAR info made on the SUN
onto a VMS system???  on earth???
