Mail problems, missing domainname

I am currently working on a DECStation 5000/120 running under Ultrix V4.2.
A friend hacked sendmail for us sometime last year so that a SUN SPARCStation
1+ would be a mailserver for us. But recently I noticed a peculiar problem.
Mail sent out from the DEC is missing the domain name in the user address,
even if it is sent outside this domain(mailing within the domain isn't a
problem). People will get mail from me addressed from, "landau.local". Instead
of "landau.Berkeley.EDU".  If I do a `hostname` I get "landau.Berkeley.EDU",
but if I do a `domainname` I get a blank line. I am assuming here that the
mail program takes the machine name and tacks on the domainname rather than
using the hostname.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.
