Colleague of mine is working on DECstation 3100s and getting this rdist error when he tries to push out /etc/passwd to his client machines:

rdist: connection failed: version numbers don't match

This didn't used to happen. The rdist man page says,

   Diagnostics
A complaint about mismatch of rdist version numbers may really stem from
some problem with starting your shell (that is, you are in too many
     groups).

Removing root from extraneous groups in /etc/group and then trying to rdist again hasn't helped. I'm not that well versed in Ultrix. Do you know anything else he should check?
