Please HELP. rz23 and adaptec 1542b scsi controler.

hallo,
please help it's urgent.

i want to connect an rz23 to a adaptec 1542b scsi controler. (this is a pc controler).
if i do so my unix (interactive 2.2) recognizes the scsi-adress but says the drive is offline.
i think the problem ist that the rz23 needs a signal form the controler to start spinning the disk motor.
( the motor does't begin to spinn). i thought the adaptec controler can handle this but how???
