 rdist says
rdist: connection failed: version numbers don't match
if what it gets back from the rsh[*] to the remote machine at
the start of a push isn't a correct rdist version number. This
can be that there's wrong version numbers, or that there are
problems starting rdist on the remote end, or just that there's
problems even starting your shell. You might want to try doing

	rsh host /usr/ucb/rdist -Server -q

and seeing what messages you get back. Alternately, you can
pick up the rdist version that's available as rdist.tar.Z
from ftp.white.toronto.edu; this is the BSD Net-2 rdist fixed
so that it doesn't run setuid and does report the output it
gets if it fails to properly start up the remote rsh.

[*: rdist doesn't use rsh but instead the rcmd(3) routine, which is
    part of its problems.]
