The kernel is /vmunix You can copy the current one to another filename, then put your new kernel into /vmunix and reboot. If the new kernel is bad, you can restore the old one.... But if the new is so bad you can't even boot up with it, then you have to boot up off the TK50 boot tape and fix it that way. (It's the equivalent of booting a PC off a floppy when the hard drive is bad.) So I would practice booting off a TK50 tape to be sure you are able to do so and get into a single-user shell.
