Hello everybody,

This is my first cry for help and my first news usage, so forgive me if I violate
unwritten rules.

I'm having the following problem:

We have an application that broadcasts messages on our local network. Since
every connected node is bothered with these messages (even if it is not interested
in them) we want to use multicasted messages.

I heard there is a protocol called IGMP (see RFC 1112) on top of IP which allows
to send messages to a group of nodes (multicast) instead of to an individual node 
(unicast) or to every node (broadcast).

Our local network consists of, among others, DEC5000's, SUN3's and SUN4's

Questions
1) Is IGMP available on the DEC5000 series ?
2) Is it or will it be always part of the TCP/IP package, or just an extension ?
3) How can I use IGMP, when, in what release ?
4) Will it be a standard, will it be implemented by many vendors ?
5) Is it my only alternative to multicast ?
