low-level graphics access to decstation 3/5000 framebuffer?

I'm looking for hints on how to access the Decstation's framebuffer,
bypassing X. I'd also like to know how to get a signal or poll when
the vertical retrace is occurring.

I know how to do this with one line on a Sun, but I'm not familiar with
the Decs or X.

Much thanks.
