Thanks for the responses. Here's a good summary from DEC on their solution.

> DIGITAL ANNOUNCES VAXELN WINDOW SERVER SOFTWARE
>
>
>MAYNARD, Mass -- February 6, 1991 -- To enhance the use of mature
>VAXstation workstations, Digital Equipment Corporation announced
>availability of software that enables these products to be used as
>high performance X-Windows terminals. The new product, called
>VAXELN Window Server software, is a layered software product that
>can be installed in the workstation over an Ethernet local area
>network, and provides users with the same level of functionality as
>in Digital's VT1300 windowing terminal.
> The VAXELN Window Server software enables users to access
>multiple hosts simultaneously, using DECnet or TCP/IP networking
>software or both. Applications accessed can be running under either
>the VMS or ULTRIX operating systems. The new software supports the
>mature VAXstation 2000, VAXstation II, and VAXstation 3200 system,
>as well as the newer VAXstation 3100 and VAXstation 3500 models.
> With the new software, users having a large VAX computer can
>readily migrate their VMS based applications from mature VAXstation
>workstations with lower performance than the current models to a
>higher performance system. The workstation retains its display
>capabilities, providing fast, high resolution presentations in
>X-Window format, while the large VAX computer provides powerful
>computing capabilities.
> According to Drew Comstock, Realtime Product Manager, "Mature
>VAXstation workstations make excellent platforms for the VAXELN
>Window Server software. Many customers have added newer, higher
>performance VAXstation and DECstation workstations; the earlier
>workstations can be converted to terminals at a fraction of the
>price of a new X-Windows terminal." He added that the software
>provides users with increased security, since the files and
>applications can be centrally managed.
> The new software is an application kernel derived from
>Digital's VAXELN realtime software. It is licensed as a VAXELN
>target at $570 per VAXstation workstation, and $310 for the media
>kit for the host VAX system. The software is available now.
> Digital Equipment Corporation, headquartered in Maynard,
