Thanks to all that responded !
I digged into MIPS assembler a little this weekend and was able to
do the patch. (sum = 15177   104 for 4.2a and 62555   104 for 4.2 ,right?)
Things fly now!
I have got the impression that i am not the only one who will be using it,
so, regarding the comments from mjr, i would be interested in any experiences
with it as well as who else wants to use it. Therefore i am willing to
provide a patch for 4.2 & 4.2a (unsupported, of course) to anyone who
drops me a mail. Comparison to prestoserve would be also rather interesting.
As i am only interested in the tranfer speed for big files, here is
a startpoint:  

    cp /genvmunix(2761504 bytes) /mountpoint  :  20.8sec w/o patch
                                              :  5.2sec  w patch
    source was a DEC DSP3085 disk (a small,nice & fast little thing;
    very good job, DEC!) on a 5k/200 and destination a Maxtor 
    Panther12 on a 5k125, both machines w/o load.

To mjr: As i don't want to warm up a thread here that belongs to 
comp.protocls.nfs, i just want to say that i was pleased to read that 
you think async writes should be a configurable option, especially if
it would let us use it on a per-filesystem basis.
