RQDX3 Compatible disks

I am looking for information on using drives other than DEC drives
on an RQDX3 controller. This is really a two part question as
I am interested in both the floppy and HD aspects. For instance,
although an RD54 is a Maxtor XT2190, I have heard (from a questionable
source) that these drives are first somehow modified.

AS far as the floppies are concerned, I am interested in whether
the commonly available (read: PC) 1.2M drives will work in place
of the RX33.

Thanks in advance. Please email replies (and requests for summary).
