Sony R/W Optical on DS3100

Does anyone have any clues on how to bring up a Sony Read/Write Optical
on a DECstation 3100?  I added it to scsi_data.c and it is recognized
but I can't really do anything to it - rzdisk, mkfs, and such don't work.

P.P.S I CAN do a low level (from the boot prom) scsi format on it.
