I sent an e-mail reply as the original poster requested, if you have
specific questions you would like answered, I will do my best to
reply (as we are doing development work for DECathena here, sometimes
I will have to decline to answer, for the obvious reasons).
The short answers to the previous posters questions are:
1. Why did you get DECathena (what needs was it to fulfill)?
None of us looked forward to sys-admin'ing hundereds
of workstations (and we *knew* they weren't going to
hire us a couple dozen new people).
2. How many workstations do you have?
~700 DECstations, with ~150 Alpha's due in Decemeber.
Located in ~50 buildings (several hundered rooms),
with about 15,000 users.
We are looking at adding other Unix workstations and
perhaps other platforms.
2. Did it meet your needs?
We added all these machines with no additional staff
(although some people have obviously been reassigned
away from other platforms).
We are roughly:
1 sysadmin
3 network types (maybe 1 FTE is PV related)
9 soft engr types (maybe 6 FTE are PV related)
3 student software engr types (1 FTE)
3 user services types
and the usual smattering of administration types and some
less well-defined support (in terms of how many FTEs) [at
least to me] in other departements like operations, accounting,
hardware engr.
3. What do you like about it?
See above.
4. What don't you like about it?
I don't want to get too specific here, most of what we would
like see to improved, either we or DEC are working on...
In broad terms...
Moira could stand the most enhancement (as it is the largest
component, this is no surprise).
The "other heads of Kerberos".
Support for "batch" jobs.
I've already mentioned that nobody seems fond of discuss,
and we are looking at a new OLC.
John
