Help! Installing CDC Wren-V w/Dialog controller on MVII/Ultrix

We need help installing a CDC Wren-V (model 94186-383H) with a Dialog
controller (model DQ696) on a MicroVax II under Ultrix.  The disk drive
seemed to format okay, and it shows up under /dev as "ra4...", but when
we try "newfs" there is endless activity on the drive.  We've made an
entry in "disktab" for the "wren", but changing the "disktab" parameters
doesn't seem to help.  Bad drive maybe?  The only thing we can do after
"newfs" is reboot.
