DEC SDI disks on a PC?

  Hi all!

Does anybody know some way to connect SDI disks to a PC?

We at Novosibirsk University have an old VAX-11/780 and are planning to
get rid of it in the nearest future. But it has about 4GB of disks connected to it
and we would be glad not to lose them. I have heard in some newsgroup about
SMD-to-SCSI adapters. But we have SDI disks (RA90, RA81).

Does such thing as SDI-to-SCSI adapter exist? Or maybe there is some
other way to attach VAX SDI disks to a PC?

  Best wishes,

  Tupisin Vladimir, Novosibirsk State University.

I don't think you can do it. The DEC SDI protocol is a proprietary serial
communication scheme.

The cost of the electricity to run these drives for a year would probably cover the
price of some new IDE or SCSI disks !

There are (were) SDI-SCSI adapters, but they were designed to let you run SCSI disks
on an SDI interface, not the other way around. It may be possible, but I doubt it.

I'd run some network server software on the VAX. You can still do quite
a few nifty things with it. I keep a VS4000 just for fun (i.e. Web
serving, network/background tasks etc.)
Otherwise, 4 GB run at maybe $1000 these days. How much do you want to
spend on the SDI adapter (e.g. an HSC with SCSI front end)?

Give the drives to a museum.

Just my $0.02,
Ralf-Peter

Just a quick note: 4 Gig drives can be as low as US $400.
