Need information about DAT drives

I serfed into www.megahaus.com to look at their SCSI tape backup
offerings. They have a 4mm DAT drive made by HP [C1533AI] having
a 4Gig native/8Gig compressed capacity, with 60MB/min sustained
transfer rate and 3 1/2" x 1.6" high form factor. That would fit
my need.

I called HP's presale number to request additional specifications
for that drive but only received information about the "HP SureStore
Tape 6000" series of DAT drives. Under the heading 'Ordering
Information', I see the item 'C1528F HP SureStore Tape 6000i'.
It matches the capacity and sustained transfer rates given for
the C1533AI model.

Can someone familiar with HP DAT drives please explain the difference
between the models.

How do 4mm DAT drives compare with 8mm models (like Exabyte)?

How reliable are these devices?

Does the Linux kernel support a device driver for these DAT drives?
What Linux compatible software can be used for creating backups?

Thank you,
Albert (ahybl@umabnet.ab.umd.edu)
