As it turns out, I ended up talking to a representative at HP. She didn't have any solutions to the problem since it seemed everything went fine during the installation. I decided to upgrade to w3.11 since it seems to handle 32 bit applications better. Of course the upgrade failed since I had high color drivers enabled (to use the scanner). The end result is that I re-installed windows 3.1, upgraded to 3.11 and presto it works. Apparently I had something in my w3.1 installation that was causing the problem. It would have been easier if HP tech support had experience with this problem. Bitch #2. I also tried to install the scsi interface card that came with scanner just in case there was some problem with the drivers for my 1542. The card fit very poorly in the expansion slot. It's as though the edge connector is too short. When I finally got it to seat (at least I thought it was seated), I powered up the computer and the power supply abruptly shut down. I called HP back and they said I must have an off brand of computer case since this hasn't happened to his knowledge. Course the other 50 cards I have inserted and pulled didn't have any trouble, but it must be the case. All in all I like the scanner. I don't like the experience of installing it in my system.
