Does anyone know of any IBM hardware which can write VGA frames directly to
video tape. Does anyone know how the pro's do it?

I'm interested in producing a short ray-traced movie but I need some way
of transfering the frames to video NON-real time. (C'mon thirty minutes per
frame here, minimum. :)

Looking for cost, availability, vendor.

I'll be using a 386.

In going from VGA to video tape, you really have two problems: VGA to NTSC (or something else that
is compatable with your VCR) and recording it one frame at a time.

For VGA to NTSC video I use a Magni Video Producer card, which seems to do a pretty good job.
If i have something that plays back in real time on my VGA, I can record directly from it. If my
scenes take a long time to render I have to use an editing VCR and an animation controller.

I've got a SONY VO-5850 U-matic recorder and a Lyon Lamb ProVas animation controller. THese aren't
cheap, with the SONY at about $5500 and the ProVas at $3000 - $4000. There are other options for
the controller - Diaquest is a popular one, but editing recorders all seem to start at about $5000
or so.

There are places that will record your stuff from disk files, so you render on your machine and send
the files to the recording service.

Chris

P.S. There are cheaper options than the Video Producer, too - Jovian makes one, I think.
