Can I use 8087 on 80286 motherboard?

I finally upgraded from an 8088 to an 80286. Can I use my 8087 on the new
motherboard? I noticed that the motherboard has a 14.31818MHz crystal near
the 80287 socket. Does this mean that the coprocessor actually runs at
4.77MHz?

Thanks for email responses, (and sorry if this is an FAQ)

The following cobinations are possible

8086 and 8088 with 8087
80186 and 80188 with 8087 (need a special chip for signal decoding)
80286 with 80287
80386 with 80287 (not for 386 mode)
80386 with 80387
80386SX with 80387SX
80486SX with 80487SX

My impression was that the 486SX was essentially the 486DX minus the
math coprocessor. Have I been misled? I hate it when people misle me. :)

Yes, on the 486DX it has a built-in co-processor, but it also has a slot
for another math co-processor called the Weitek 4167 (25/33). They
price around $500.00 (last year cost wholesale cost). It is suppose
do 3x the performance compare to the built-in co-processor. All 486DX
(exception of a few) have the Weitek slot. My 486-25 last year didn't but
when I got my 486-33DX last summer replacing the 486-25, it had the Weitek
slot.

This is not a FLAME, but the 487 is not built into the 486SX.

Please take your foot out of your mouth. The _486_SX_ does *NOT* have a
coprocessor built in, and that is what the 80487 SX is for.
