perfomance problem with voodoo5?

First let me say everything people are ranting about FSAA is true. Once
you've used it you dont ever know how you dealt with the shimmering.
FSAA is definitely not just about the "jaggies".

I'm having some unusual findings with the Voodoo 5500. Naturally, when
I first got it I wanted to see if it was faster than the Voodoo3 it
replaced. Fired up quake2 and unreal and there was real improvement.
This is on a P3 500 (560...5x112), 128mb ram, Monster sound MX300,
Stickworks digital F22/TQS, Linksys Etherfast 10/100 (dont think
anything but the processor matters, but who knows!)

Next, I do F4, JF/A-18, and USAF and there wasn't any improvement over
the Voodoo3, maybe even somewhat worse (at fastest performance). But
then when testing with FSAA, there was no performance hit, same rates on
or off. I even went as far as to install win 98 clean on a hidden
partition, install USAF and still no change. And yes, FSAA was really
off with the "fastest performance" setting and on with the "FSAA
x4"setting. This was with the box drivers, the hacked drivers, and today
with the 1.01.00.

I know from reading about the FSAA toggle key registry hack that the
Voodoo 5 reserves memory, etc. and that the toggle wont improve frame
rate. I wonder if something is wrong with my install or card that would
explain this relative performance lag over my voodoo3. Or maybe I'm
just exposing the fact that video is not the bottleneck. Still, I would
expect some improvement over the v3.

Still, even if this isn't some error, the image quality is well worth
it, and I'm not getting much frame rate difference with FSAAx4, so it's
kind of a freebie right now.

My results were exactly the same for flight sims (not a Q3 player) I didn't
get any improvement in FPS over my V3 3500 and FPS is about the same in
Fastest and 2x but the image quality at 2X is WOW. Plan on trying to find a
CuMine this week to improve the FPS. I understand that with V5 the
performance increase in going from a katmai to CuMine is not linear but
substantilly better so we have to see for ourselves.
