V3-3K lockup on socket 7 mobo...

..all I get is black screen at bootup.
Specs: AMD K6 266mhz, Chaintech 5agm (VIA VP3 chipset, 66mhz) w/128 MB
RAM, WD 9,1 GB HD w/2MB cache.
I may be flogging a dead horse running the V3-3K on such a
non-PII-setup, but I'd be grateful for *any* tips on this one.
(I'd prefer waiting till autumn before investing in new CPU/MB... :)

here's something that worked for me. i was having the same problem after i installed my card: i got a blank screen and the thing just wouldn't boot. i also heard a loud beep when i first turned it on. so i put my old video card back in, went to the system properties and removed my old video driver. then i turned it off, took out the old card and put in the voodoo3. when i booted up again, it worked fine. hope it works for you. john Eskil Brandvik wrote: > ..all I get is black screen at bootup. > > Specs: AMD K6 266mhz, Chaintech 5agm (VIA VP3 chipset, 66mhz) w/128 MB > RAM, WD 9,1 GB HD w/2MB cache. > > I may be flogging a dead horse running the V3-3K on such a > non-PII-setup, but I'd be grateful for *any* tips on this one. > > (I'd prefer waiting till autumn before investing in new CPU/MB... :) > > -- > <Eskil Brandvik> ebrandvi@online.no > Hyggen, NORWAY

Thanks.
I've done it: (Control Panel-Display-Advanced-Standard VGA 16 colours
card, -shutdown, olde Viper330/Pure3D out, -V3 in, Power ON and once
again --> the system hangs pre-POST and locks up. No matter how I
fuddle about in BIOS during SETUP this rig locks up.
<Got an Award BIOS dated 03/04/98 with lots of bells & whistles.>
My theory being that the Chaintech 5AGM/Via VP3 chipset combined with
266 mhz K6 (not K6-2 3D-Now etc.) can't hack a V3.
Anyone got an idea about K6-V3 compatibility vs. K6-2/III ditto?
(I've been to AMD's site and they only list 1 year+ old hardware
as "compatible" etc.)

Done. (as per enclosed V3 manual that one)
Still no dice; black screen/no POST.

actually, what i meant was actually remove ALL video drivers, not set it to standard vga display. i tried that first and it didn't work, but when i highlighted the standard vga display and then clicked remove, it worked. sorry if that doesn't work for you, and i hope you find a solution soon. the v3 kicks ass. john Eskil Brandvik wrote: > On Sat, 26 Jun 1999 01:05:46 -0400, John Han <gman2b@earthlink.net> > wrote: > > >here's something that worked for me. i was having the same problem after > >i installed my card: i got a blank screen and the thing just wouldn't > >boot. i also heard a loud beep when i first turned it on. so i put my > >old video card back in, went to the system properties and removed my old > >video driver. then i turned it off, took out the old card and put in the > >voodoo3. when i booted up again, it worked fine. hope it works for you. > > > > Thanks. > I've done it: (Control Panel-Display-Advanced-Standard VGA 16 colours > card, -shutdown, olde Viper330/Pure3D out, -V3 in, Power ON and once > again --> the system hangs pre-POST and locks up. Locks up every time? My new K6-2 366-66 would lock up about 3 of 4 boots, but I found a patch on microsoft site. It was actually a Windows95 problem with the AMD. In fact, if he did apply that patch then that might actually cause problems as there is a warning not to install it unless you have the faster CPU version. FWIW, I also have a V3 3000 running on an MVP3 Tekram mainboard and using a K6-2 300 on Win98 with zero problems. Everything runs great. I think that he might just simply have a bad card. He may need to exchange it. He could also try checking his CMOS setup for an option to use AGP over PCI or vise-versa. He may want to try turning AGP Tex Swap support off or on in CMOS. Also check to make sure the card is properly seated, is the cable plugged in all the way etc. Check the simple stuff first. Just a thought.

Been there too; it's actually a dedicated patch for the K6-2 350
meant to adress Win95 problems.
Could it be the K6 can't hack it while the K6-2 can? Hmm...

The 5AGM can only cope with just that K6-2 300 as the fastest
compatible listed CPU, so I'm pondering over buying one as a
short-term solution. I'd rather ride my motorcycle right now than
spend dosh on PC hardware.
..but then again; once you're hooked etc... :)

I'll take it back to the store and check it out on monday.

I'd rather ride my motorcycle >right now than spend dosh on PC hardware. Well, my P5MVP-A4 can handle a K6-III and goes all the way up to 450Mhz. I can also set it manually to 100x5.5=550Mhz although it probably wouldn't boot with it. AMD is saying that it will have a 500Mhz version of the K6-2 and/or III out soon. The only thing I don't like about the board is it's 125Meg Caching limit because of its measly 512k onbd cache. 128 Megs is what I have now so Im kind of stuck there for now. I did own an FIC VA-503+ AT board that also ran well with the V3 but it would not run my generic PC100 SDRAM at 100Mhz where this Tekram ATX board does so with no problems. The Tekram board seems a little slower than my 503+ board but it also seems more stable so it's a nice trade-off. This was my first ATX board and I will never go back to AT again. It's so much simpler and cleaner to install.

I have a MicroStar 5169 mthrboard with ALI chipset, V3 2000 & a AMD K6-2 300 cpu. I've tried all the BIOS flashes new & old available, changed BIOS settings, & fresh installs of Win95 & Win98 but I still get occasional blue screens with .vxd errors & reboot/registry errors as well. Everything runs fine if I use my old ATI Mach32 card. Win95 seems most stable especially if I use IE4 & not IE5. Hope they put out some new V3 drivers soon.

Nah; unless the AGP-port/VIA chipset/voltage reg. on the 5AGM doesn't
hack it with a V3 board my own (guesstimated) theory goes more towards
the K6 lacking PII cpu capabilities, forcing a bootup lock.
Dunno if a K6-2 300mhz (the fastest AMD this MB can take) will help as
a short- term solution. Guess it's time to step up to the ATX crowd
(huff, puff, pant, pant etc.) and consider a Celery.
What puzzles me is that when I take the V3 out and put back the Viper
V330/Pure3D combo all things work like stink again.
Them is the breaks. :-(
