my friend made a copy of a CD on his CD-ROM burner but whenever i try to read it from my drive, it doesn't work. in DOS i get that "abort, retry, fail?" msg and in windows, it says there's no CD in the drive. with all other CD-ROMs it works without any problem. i'm not sure if this has more to do with the original CD my friend copied it from. with that original i was also having problems getting my drive to recognise it. he says he hasn't heard any complaints/ hardware troubles from anyone before. where would the error be? something to do with my CD drive? (i only got it - a 4X creative MPC2 drive - in 2nd half of 95, so i don't think it's that obsolete) i've updated my windows drivers with a july release from creative labs but it hasn't changed things any.... (please email copies of replies as well. thanx!!) ellecer

The drive absolutely supports CD-R media in general, just perhaps not the media you used. What color is it (on the bottom)? Green, gold or blue are pretty much the choices - the top is always gold. If it is green, the next question is who made it? TDK seems to have about the best compatibility record for greenies. Other companies have various compatability reports - some good, some bad. I think I would try a gold CD-R (like Kodak) and see if you can read it then. Another thing to check is if your reader is dirty. There are various ways to clean the lens, mostly pretty easy. Check your local computer store as they probably have something. -- ---------------------------------------*** pcrowley@mcs.net - Paul Crowley CD-ROM Productions - Get a CD-ROM with YOUR data on it http://www.mcs.net/~pcrowley ---------------------------------------***

Could be media incompatability. What kind of media was it put on? What color is it on the bottom? Green? Gold? Something else? If your friend can loan you another CD-R with the same media and one on a different brand media (preferrably different color) you might learn something. Often, some CD-ROM drives don't read the greenish media all that well. -- ---------------------------------------*** pcrowley@mcs.net - Paul Crowley CD-ROM Productions - Get a CD-ROM with YOUR data on it http://www.mcs.net/~pcrowley ---------------------------------------***
