Problem with 700M CD's

Hello everyone

I'm a computer technician at a high school, and we have some older CD
ROM's which are not able to read the newer 700MB burned CD's, but will
read the older 650MB ones with no problem. The trouble is most if not
all manufacturers no longer make the 650MB type.

Does anyone know of a manufacturer which still makes the 650MB type?

Has anyone else encountered this problem, and found a solution for it?
The CD ROM's are Diamond Data 8X.

It just occured to me that maybe the difference between the 'audio' CD's
and the 'data' ones, could be that the audio ones are the older 650MB
type, so that older audio CD ROM's can read them. Does anyone know if
I'm right? As far as I can see, data is just data, and it shouldn't
matter to the CD whether the data is musical data or not, so I can't see
what other difference there could be between the audio and data types.

Alternatively, is there some nice person (in Australia) who has a few
dozen blank 650MB CD's, that they would be willing to swap for the same
number of 700MB ones? Any write speed of at least 2x will be fine.

Please email me at ajclark@NOSPAM.senet.com.au (without the nospam) if
you have any ideas / suggestions, as I rarely check this group.

Anthony

Probably cheeper to buy a new CD-rom (muti-disk) should cost about $50 in Australia.

Pay a a bit more and you could buy a DVD-rom, ~$75.

A fellow Aussie here. TDK Audio CD-Rs come in 650MB but can I suggest
that you try the TDK 700MBs. My car player has the same problem until
I recorded onto TDK Audio CD-Rs and the problem went away. (I hope)
TDK also still make 650MB data CD_Rs

Every store I've been into, including Harvey Norman, has the TDK
650MBs.

Your problem is twofold. The older players don't like the blue-green
dyes used by todays media. The older Silver and Gold (Where are my
beloved Kodak discs?) were no problem.

The second problem is write speed. The faster the speed the more
problems it seems. If you can take it down to 4X write speed it helps.

Then again, if you have a spare $89 visit Dick Smith's and pick up the
BENQ DVD-ROM to play back. There are also brands like 4KUS, Liteon
that cost the same. The DVD burners are not much more. The smaller
computer stores seem to have those.
