CD ROM... help requested..

I've just purchased a new CD ROM drive (Sony ATAPI/IDE) & a ESS 16bit
soundcard (1688 PnP).. I have installed them myself as I know a fair bit
about PC's.. *but* it seems I just dont have the full knack as I cant
get the CD to interface with the soundcard.

If I set the CD drive to master & plug the interface into the soundcard,
win95 recognises the presence of the soundcard but not the CD. If I
daisychain the CD to the HDD (setting the CD as slave), win95 recognises
both presences but you cant get audio out of the CD.

The wierd thing is, the CD is *supposed* to be a Sony (altho it dont say
that on the actual drive but I bought it from a reputable supplier & the
drivers that came with it were Sony & they work with the CD), but the
data cable that fits into the CD dont fit into the SOny interface on the
soundcard.. I plug it into the Panasonic one (does this make a diff??)

Can someone help me PLEASE!!!

(btw, what is the CSEL setting on the CD next to the master & slave
jumpers??)

Do you have an audio cable connected from the CD drive to the
soundcard?

You say your drive is IDE/ATAPI, but I don't think you have an IDE
connector on your sound card. The Panasonic connector can use the
same cable as IDE, but it is not the same interface.

If you have a secondary IDE port in your computer, the best thing to
do would be to connect the CD drive by itself as master on the
secondary port. Otherwise, you'll probably have to connect it as
slave on the port with the hard drive (which may slow down your hard
drive's performance). In either event, you should disable the ports
on your soundcard.

I don't know.

You may have answered your own question. Your CDROM drive has an
IDE interface. Your soundcard has Panasonic and Sony interfaces.
These are proprietory interfaces and though physically the cable
may fit, the signals sent are different.

For the CDROM drive to work, the sound card must have a EIDE
interface on it (which yours doesn't). Though the brand is Sony,
the interface is an industry standard IDE interface.

Hope this helps,
Paul

Could your IDE controller on your soundcard be bad or disabled?

This sounds like you didn't plug the audio cable into the soundcard, or you
may have a bad audio cable.

The "Panasonic" is what lots of soundcards use for the true IDE controller.
The "Sony" interface is for older sony's that used a proprietary non-IDE
interface.

I'd say that the interface on the sound card is not an IDE interface.
Probrably proprietary.

This might be a stupid question but...
Why don't you ask the dealer from whom you bought it for help?
