I hope someone can offer a solution to my problem before I lose ALL of my hair! Just purchased a Creative GCD-R542B Quad speed CD-Rom and no-name sound card with IDE interface. No manual was supplied with the CD-ROM. With the CD-ROM connected to the sound card's IDE interface, neither DOS, Win3.1 or Win95 will detect the drive. I've tried all three CD-ROM jumper settings (ma, sl, cs) without success (what does 'cs' mean?). Here's a rundown of what's happening: DOS Ran the install disk which added the following lines to config.sys: device=c:\sbcd\drv\sbide.sys /D:msc001 /p:1E8,11 /v and autoexec.bat: c:\sbcd\drv\mscdex.exe /d:msc001 /m:8 /v When dos is booted, the sbide.sys cannot find the CDROM and fails to load. Thus mscdex.exe also fails to load. WIN95 After installing the sound card drivers successfully, Win95 fails to automatically detect the CD-ROM. Under manual hardware installation, the driver loads but can't find the device. Under CD-ROM Controllers, Device manager tells me that the CD-ROM isn't installed or the driver isn't loaded (error code 10). The driver uses the same (default) interrupt and address settings as the dos driver (1E8, interrupt 11). Without a manual for the drive, I have no idea what settings to use for interrupt and address. Should I be using the sbide.sys driver when the CD-ROM is actually connected to the sound card (not the hard disk interface)? What should the interrupt and address settings be for the sound card's IDE interface? The sound card manual mentions nothing about the ide interface specifics. Unfortunately, connecting the CD-ROM to my HD controller isn't an option. I'm using an old Tekram cacheing controller which doesn't seem to accept the CD-ROM as an ide drive. I've read a number of similar requests for help in this newsgroup, but no definitive reply. Just a lot of other people with the same problem! Please - any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance. -- Regards Ross --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ross F. You need to change your sound card configuration and also the values on the sbide.sys device line on config.sys. Even if it won't work, it can always be the case that you have an old version of the sbide.sys driver. Old versions only worked on Sound Blaster's IDE controllers. In this case, check creative labs www.creaf.com and see if you can find a new version of the driver there. See ya! Leonel Morgado

I deleted my sound card from the 'System' icon in control panel and then did another hardware auto detect. It then found the IDE port. After a reboot it found my CD-DRIVE without a problem. Moral: Make sure Win95 can see the sound card's IDE before trying to find the CD-ROM. This took me 2 weeks to work out. >I hope someone can offer a solution to my problem before I lose ALL of >my hair! >Just purchased a Creative GCD-R542B Quad speed CD-Rom and no-name >sound card with IDE interface. Many thanks to all who replied. I now have the CDROM working in DOS/Win3.11/Win95. This may be of interest to other readers. Here's what I did: The DOS problem was due to incorrect address/interrupt. The install program sets these to the 1st?? IDE controller, but the sound card's IDE is apparently on the 2nd IDE controller (address 170, interrupt 15, can't be changed). This works: Config.sys device=c:\sbcd\drv\sbide.sys /D:msc001 /p:170,15 /v This also allowed operation in Win3.11 as well. Apparently, (according to a Creative readme file) the creative Win95 drivers are only for IDE ports 3 and 4???. The driver wouldn't allow address 170 so couldn't be used in Win95. The Win95 driver (for controller 1 and 2) wasn't loaded because it didn't detect the CDROM drive. This problem was solved by adding the CDROM's DOS config.sys and autoexec.bat lines to WIN95's config/autoexec (edited from within Win95). This works well, but I assume the CDrom is now accessed in 16 bit mode :( Hope that helps.
