HELP: major CD frustration

Hi,

Can someone offer any help, my CD is on the fritz and resisting all
attempts to fix it. It's driving me nuts!

Here's the story:

The device in question is a 16x Optics Maverick 8841 (a bit of generic kit
from Singapore), and it's worked perfectly since I bought it about a year
ago. About a week ago it stopped recognising certain disks, when I inserted
one of them the CD and HD LEDs would flicker for several seconds then Win95
would declare that the CD was not accessible or the PC would lock up
completely. Occasionally there would be a lot of thrashing sounds from
inside the drive, or you could hear the disk being spun at different
speeds.

Like I said this would only happen with certain disks, with others the
system would work fine. And if I boot the PC to DOS using real mode CD
drivers on a floppy I can browse the problem CDs without any difficulty.

I've tried reinstalling Win95, but no luck. I've even reformatted my HD and
installed a newer build of Win95 (OS R2) but the problem remains.

The problem disks are neither scratched nor dirty, are originals, and work
fine in friends PCs. I've used a cleaning disk on the drive but to no
avail.

Is the drive completely fragged? What can I do next? Any suggestion
gratefully received.

Thanks

Ed
