I was hoping somebody may be able to help. I have a Compaq Concerto 486 8/33 with PCMCIA slots. It has the Compaq Socket Services software installed and boots up to find the PCMCIA modem I have been using for some time. It currently runs Win 3.xx. I have recently aquired an external 'Archos Overdrive CD' which was originally manufactured and intended for the Amiga 600/1200 using the PCMCIA interface. I have looked inside the casing, and it basically appears to be a Mitsumi IDE 4 speed CD just like the type you fit to a PC with an interface adaptation by the manufacturer, connecting the 4 prong power socket to the PCMCIA cable (along with the data). There is also a provision for an external 12v supply. I thought I could get the Cd unit to run from the laptop. I have removed the modem, amd replaced it with the CD unit. On boot up, the Cd led flashes briefly a couple of times but the unit isn't recognised. I have tried installing a generic IDE Cd driver and MSCDEX but the unit can't be found. I'm pretty certain the hardware is fine, it's a software problem....any words of wisdom? -- Stuart Brown

I would imagine you'll have to find driver software to go between the PC Card and the Compaq Socket Services. Good luck. You might try an AltaVista search on the company that made the drive. Terry
