I don't know about large heatsinks, but have you considered using a Peltier
device to cool the CPU _below_ ambient temperature.
The Peltier device is a semiconductor which acts rather like an electronic
fridge. It extracts heat from one surface and outputs it on another surface
and are used in a variety of applications from infra-red detectors to the
12V "cool boxes" that are used in cars and boats.
If you mount a Peltier device between the CPU and the heatsink it could cool
the CPU and allow more consistant running at higher speeds. Obviously you
would also need a large heatsink on the "hot" side of the device. This will
not only have to dissipate the heat from the CPU but also the heat
dissipated by the Peltier device which will consume a significant amount of
power, could be several 10's of watts.
Alternatively you could fabricate a water cooled heatsink. Now that would be
novel, although I believe that certain large super-computers use water
cooling too.
